PRESENTATION

Occupational Therapy is a profession whose function is to provide greater autonomy and quality of life to people and to promote the health and well-being of individuals, groups and communities, through participation in occupations.

The Degree in Occupational Therapy lasts 4 years, each year corresponding to 60 ECTS, in a total of 240 ECTS. The Degree in Occupational Therapy course is of an eminently practical nature, focusing on the acquisition of the necessary skills for the development of an integrated and integrative approach that can help people with occupational dysfunctions resulting from the presence of physical, mental, sensorial or social alterations or environmental barriers, without neglecting research and scientific development. This requires knowledge of the biological, medical, human, psychological, social and technological sciences, together with theories of occupation and participation.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY CYCLE

a) Explain the theoretical concepts that underlie Occupational Therapy, such as the occupational nature of human beings and occupational performance;
b) Valuing and respecting individual differences, beliefs and habits, as well as the influence they have on occupation and participation;
c) Select, modify and apply theories and models of practice in order to respond to the occupational and health needs of individuals/populations;
d) Provide accessible environments promoting occupational justice;
e) Synthesize and apply relevant knowledge from life, psychological, social and technological sciences, together with theories of occupation and participation;
f) Comply with local, national and European policies and requirements, as well as professional Occupational Therapy regulations;
g) Research, analyze and critically integrate scientific and other literature in order to adopt evidence-based Occupational Therapy practices;
h) Take a proactive role in the development and promotion of Occupational Therapy.

DEVELOPED SKILLS

Throughout the cycle of studies, the student should develop specific knowledge, skills and competences, for the autonomous performance of Occupational Therapy, with the objective of promoting health through occupation, namely:

a) Define/execute an Occupational Therapy program, supported by specific assessment and intervention techniques and methods (identifying changes in occupation areas and prioritizing objectives), in order to obtain the informed participation of the individual in his/her life process;
b) Use the therapeutic potential of occupations, through the analysis of activities and taking into account the psychosocial, economic, cultural and environmental contexts;
c) Working in partnership with individuals/groups for health promotion, prevention of occupational dysfunction and injustice, rehabilitation and treatment, throughout their life cycle;
d) Accurately record data resulting from practice and use them to obtain scientific evidence for practice and recognition of the profession.

Through a partnership with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, students take anatomy classes at the Institute of Legal Medicine at the Hospital de São João in Porto.
